Under the direction of Scoutmaster Ron Jurain, scouts from Troop 118 rose early on Monday morning in the rain to conduct a special Memorial Day tribute to soldiers who have died. Bob Madara, Commander of the VFW Post #8691 (Washingtonville), led the ceremony at the Salisbury Mills Civil War Monument (www.suvcw.org/ny/monuments/orange/salisburymills.htm). Eagle Scout Chris Reimer, who was in attendance, redesigned and rebuilt the monument’s grounds several years ago for his Eagle project.

Immediately before the ceremony began, Assistant Scoutmaster Gilles Reimer sighted a bald eagle flying overhead, a fitting sign as the monument itself is topped with an eagle in flight.

Senior Patrol Leader Jacob Harrell led the scouts who placed a wreath and American flags at the monument. Following a prayer read by Commander Madara, scouts raised the American flag, the New York state flag, and the POW-MIA memorial flag, setting them all to half-mast in honor of the remembrance. Assistant Senior Patrol Leader Matt Terwilliger played taps as scouts concluded the ceremony with a salute.

Comments:
