Families and neighbors lined the sidewalk along Hudson Street and Main Street in the village and town of Cornwall Monday to celebrate Memorial Day.

Though the morning started off stormy, by 10 am the weather cleared and people came out to look on as a short parade lead by Cornwall’s American Legion Post #353 color guard moved through the village to the soldier and sailor memorial across from town hall.

The parade, which included the New York Military Academy marching band as well as the local fire and police department and local officials, stopped once along the route to lay a wreath at the base of a stone veteran’s memorial outside of Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary School. Cubs, boy scouts, girl scouts and brownies also joined in the Memorial Day parade.

After the parade and up through town and back to the memorial across from town hall to lie wreathes and hold a small memorial ceremony. Members of the Cornwall Fire Departments, the Storm King Engine Co. #2 and its ladies auxiliary, the town and village police departments, American Legion and the Cornwall Historical Society put wreaths at the base of the monument.

Vinnie Manion, commander of the American Legion post, told the gathered crowd that this year marked the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. In remembrance Manion read aloud the names of the 21 Cornwall men who died during the war, he also read aloud the names of the three Congressional Medal of Honor recipients from Cornwall.

The ceremony featured brief remarks from local leaders ,including Town Supervisor Kevin Quigley and Village Mayor Brendan Coyne. All gave quick speeches on how important it is to continue remembering the nation’s veterans. However it was Manion’s final statement that best summed up the feeling of the day..

“I’m glad everyone was here today, and I want you to come back next year and bring your neighbors,” said Manion. “We have to pass this on and especially to our children; we have to pass the torch to our children.
