General News: Man Charged with Stealing Snow Plow

May 24, 2011

By Charlie B. Scirbona

A Monroe man learned an important lesson last Tuesday: If you’re going to steal something, make sure your get-away vehicle doesn’t break down.

Police charged Jody VanDunk, 50, of Monroe with grand larceny in the third degree and criminal possession of stolen property in the third degree, both felonies, after police received a report of a disabled pickup truck on Route 32.

Town of Cornwall Police Chief Todd Hazard said that after the police got the call, another person passed by the disabled truck and recognized the snow plow in the back as belonging to a friend of his. The driver called his friend who checked and found that the plow was missing from where he stored it just off Route 32. Hazard said that it was a lucky break that a friend of the victim happened to be passing by at the time.

Police were assisted by Town of New Windsor Police, and was additionally charged with an unrelated incident. VanDunk was arraigned before New Windsor Town Justice Richard Thorpe and was remanded to Orange County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail.
