General News: Cornwall Connects A Day of Community

May 18, 2011

There’s so much happening at Cornwall Public Library on Saturday, May 21st that you really need to plan to spend at least part of the day there!

The librarians, researchers and all the staff and Friends of the Cornwall Public Library have been busy organizing a day-long celebration focusing on building a community. A highlight this year is a Film Festival, which includes a screening of the ABeth Texter, in charge of public relations for the library, tells us what to expect:

The 2nd annual CORNWALL CONNECTING Non-Profit Lawn Party kicks off at 10:00 a.m. and remains open until 3:00 p.m.

Non-profit organizations providing programs and services for residents of the Cornwall Central School District will be on hand to introduce themselves, provide information about their organization, identify volunteering opportunities, and let you know how you may contribute (if you so wish).

Fresh homemade baked goods and cold beverages will be available for purchase from the Friends of Cornwall Library. There’s still time to sign up to participate, too. Contact Beth Texter at the library by phone (534-8282) or by e-mail: [email protected] – soon, please! (RAINDATE: Sunday, May 22 – Noon to 4:00 p.m.)

CELEBRATE OUR PLANET!

At 9:00 a.m., DIG IN THE DIRT begins for anyone who wants to help spruce up the Library’s butterfly
and flower gardens. Wear clothes that can get dirty and bring your digging tools. Children should be accompanied by an adult who plans to stay with them.

At 10:00 a.m., it’s FIX UP WITH A FLAT (Dig in the Dirt for Adults) or DONATE A 6-PAK (of
annual flowers). Bill Birnbryer, a library patron and long-time garden volunteer, will be supervising the planting of annual flowers in the library’s various gardens. Contributions of flats of annual flowers are being requested. Come to plant, come to donate – or both!

A “Celebrate Our Planet” FILM FEST will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Gasland - In 2009, filmmaker Josh Fox learned his home in the Delaware River Basin was on
top of the Marcellus Shale, a rock formation containing natural gas that stretches across New York, Pennsylvania and huge stretches of the Northeast. He was offered $100,000 to lease his land for a new method of drilling developed by Halliburton and soon discovered this was only a part of a 34-state drilling campaign, the largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history. Part mystery, part travelogue, and part banjo showdown, Gasland documents Josh’s cross-country odyssey to find out if the controversial process of hydraulic fracturing - or fracking - is actually safe. As he interviews people who live on or around current fracking sites, Josh learns of things gone horribly wrong, from illness to hair loss to flammable water, and his inquiries lead him ever deeper into a web of secrets, lies, conspiracy, and contamination - a web that potentially stretches to threaten the New York Watershed. Unearthing a shocking story about a practice that is understudied and inadequately regulated, Gasland races to find answer about fracking before it’s far too late.

3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
’Til the River Runs Clear - This video tells the story of a remarkable grassroots effort to
clean up the Hudson River. It recounts the building of the Clearwater, a traditional wooden sloop that was launched by folksinger Peter Seeger in the 1960s to draw attention to the fact the Hudson was so polluted by local industry that it was nearly dead; its waters were foul and black; its banks a wasteland. With its extraordinary crew of committed men and women - and with funding from improvised music festivals featuring some of America’s greatest singers - the Clearwater began to offer environmental education and advocacy programs that over four decades have helped turn the Hudson into a healthy river, a place where wildlife thrives.

Come one, come all, to Cornwall Public Library on Saturday, May 21st – a day filled with great events and activities that will both educate and build awareness in a most enjoyable fashion!
