As confirmed last week, village of Cornwall-on-Hudson Mayor Brendan Coyne did not re-appoint Paul Weber as village police chief during the village Board of Trustees monthly business meeting Monday.

Weber resigned from his post last week as well as from his position as a Newburgh police sergeant and Coyne said he didn’t intend to reappoint him as chief. Weber had to resign from his position for at least one day in order to collect his pension from the Newburgh department.

During the board meeting Coyne explained the situation and invited the board members to express their views on the decision. Trustee Andrew Argenio asked the mayor to reconsider his decision, and said that Weber had gone above and beyond his job description during his time as chief.

Trustee Mark Edsall said that while he’s known Weber a long time and respects his knowledge as a police officer, he also respected the mayor’s decision. Edsall added that Weber had told him last week that he wasn't interested in returning to the chief's position..

Trustee Barbara Gosda disagreed with Edsall.

“Gee Mark, I had a conversation with Paul, too, and he said he would be the chief if that’s what the residents of the village wanted,” said Gosda. Both Gosda and Argenio went door-to-door over the weekend to talk with residents about the issue and urge them to come to Monday’s meeting.

Village Resident Emily Thomas did just that. Thomas spoke during the public comment period about her concern over Weber being let go and what she saw as the politicization of the village police department.

“The refusal to reappoint (Weber) seems arbitrary, petty and politically motivated,” she said.

Comments:

I thought Coyne ran on the notion he would work together with the board.

Well, he is working with part of the board-the same part that worked against Mayor Gross.

Working together is not the same as blind agreement.

Mayor Coyne and Mark Edsall stated that Paul Weber is not interested in the Chief of Police position yet others who have spoken with Paul, to include Trustee Gosda and my husband, have said that Paul would be willing to be the Chief if that is what the residents want. I am sure that when he met with the mayor and Trustee Edsall and they told him that he was not going to be reappointed he accepted their decision. That does not mean that he is not interested or willing to do the job. Why would the mayor want to get rid of an honorable man who has done everything he can to support the village board and this community?

Paul Weber was a knowledgeable and efficient Chief, a "good cop," in the best sense of that term -- and nobody's patsy. Plus, he did precisely what the previous board asked him to do in finding ways to cut costs, then got scapegoated for the solution that the board unanimously had supported before the December mob scene.

What we have developed here is a classic negative filter for talent.

What professional worth his or her salt would want to come into such an environment?
