Parking causes safety concerns, mothers say |

A group of parents of students at Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary School is asking the village government to restrict parking along the school fence between 8:15 a.m. and 9 a.m., prime drop-off hours. The parents sent a letter to Mayor Moulton and the board of trustees, along with a petition signed by 38 people, asking for the changes. School principal Kenneth Schmidt and superintendent Tim Rehm support their efforts.
Lisa Silverstone, a mother of two, says when cars are parked along the fence at drop-off time, children are forced to get out of their cars in the middle of the roadway, creating an unsafe condition. “It makes me real nervous,” Silverstone says, “especially with those big SUVs and the little children running.”
Until two years ago, parking was prohibited along the fence and cars would move along in a more or less orderly manner, then children would exit their cars at the top of the line.
Then, parking spaces were created to relieve a lack of parking spaces for drivers visiting the village center.
The new rules make it more chaotic in the morning, Silverstone says, and she is hoping that the village will amend the rules to prohibit parking for 45 minutes in the morning.
The issue was discussed on Monday’s board of trustees work session, where police chief Charlie Williams urged the mayor to consider other alternatives as well. He suggested exploring the possibility of widening the road in that area and pointed out that the village is currently receiving proposals for a comprehensive study of traffic flow and parking in the area.
