General News: Girl Scouts Invited To Heritage Weekend

May 13, 2011

From the Orange County Executive's Office

Orange County Executive Edward A. Diana and Commissioner Richard L. Rose of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation are pleased to announce the upcoming
Girl Scout Heritage weekend at the County’s Hill-Hold Museum in Montgomery. A sleepover event for Girl Scouts of all ages, the Heritage weekend will begin Saturday, June 4 at 1 p.m. and end the following morning, Sunday, June 5 at 11 a.m.

The Heritage weekend will offer Girl Scouts hands-on opportunities to experience and understand the life of a young lady living on a farm in the 18th century. Girls will try their hand at the daily tasks of life on a farm in 1769, including wood gathering, cooking over an open hearth fire, fetching water, sewing by hand, and soap and candle making. The busy day will end with dinner and relaxing around a fire under the stars, before turning in to tent camp on Hill-Hold’s beautiful front lawn. (A day program is available. Please contact the Park’s Department for more information.) There will be activities appropriate for Girl Scouts of all ages.

Important to note: Participants must bring all necessary camping gear, including a tent and sleeping bag, and Scouts must be accompanied by an adult for the entire length of the program, including the overnight.

The cost is $20 per person. The fee will cover craft supplies, afternoon snack, dinner and breakfast. Pre-registration is required by May 21, 2011. Upon completion of the program participants will receive a Sarah Wells and Hill-Hold participation badge. Sarah Wells badge activities include learning about Sarah’s Journey, a scavenger hunt, scrapbooking, family tree exercises, and a skit.

This event is open to all Girl Scout troops in the Heart of the Hudson Council. For a complete schedule, troops looking for community hours, or to register, please contact Susan Tucker at 615-3833 or e-mail at [email protected]. For more information about Hill-Hold, visit www.hillholdandbrickhouse.org.

Special events are co-sponsored by the Friends of Hill-Hold and Brick House and the Orange County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation. Hill-Hold Museum is located on Route 416 between Montgomery and Goshen.
