General News: Pedestrian, Bike Use Proposed for Route 218

May 11, 2011

By Charlie B. Scirbona

The village of Cornwall-on-Hudson is looking at using Route 218 as more than just a way around Storm King Mountain.

During the village board of trustees work session Monday, the board discussed the possibility of opening Route 218 to pedestrian and bicycle traffic on Sundays for eight weeks starting June 19.

The proposal is the brainchild of Trustee Andrew Argenio, who said during the meeting that closing the road for one day on the weekends for pedestrian use could develop the same kind of popularity that the Walkway Over the Hudson has drawn.

“It’s a way to increase tourism to the village and to help the local businesses,” said Argenio.

He added that the Orange County Board of Tourism, the New York Department of Transportation and the Town of Highlands were all on board with the plan.

The board members seemed receptive to the idea but wanted a more detailed resolution put together for the monthly business meeting.

I think if it was done as a one day special events that would draw people and money to the town to shop. a few hikers is not going to improve the ability of the stores to be profitable. Have a motorcycle event... see how much money you would have then. That road is a hot spot for bikers from all around.
