General News: Police Chase Ends With Arrest for DWI

May 04, 2011

By Charlie B. Scirbona

A Pennsylvania man is facing two driving-while-intoxicated class A misdemeanors and several traffic violations after he led police on a chase up Route 9W on Saturday.

Town of Cornwall police say that Jacob Summers, 22, of Phoenixville, PA, was arrested after he tried to flee them repeatedly. An EMS operator from the town of Highlands first reported Summers to Cornwall police, saying that he witnessed a tan vehicle driving all over the road on Route 9W and almost hitting the median multiple times.

Cornwall police first attempted to pull Summers over around 9:30 pm at the intersection of 9W and Laurel Avenue. Summers pulled to the side of the road like he was stopping, but immediately started driving again, police say.

Cornwall officers again tried to stop Summers at the turnoff for Academy Avenue, and Summers again pulled to the side like he was stopping before taking off once more.

Police caught up with Summers for a third time at the intersection of Route 9W and Old Route 9W. This time Officers Gebert and Casullo were able to approach Summers’ vehicle on foot before he fled for the third time up Old Route 9W.

The end of the chase came when Summers tried to turn around in the parking lot of the St. Thomas Episcopal Church where he drove onto the lawn and crashed into a tree stump. With his vehicle hung up on the stump, police were able to finally get to Summers and forcefully remove him from the driver’s seat.  Police from the town of New Windsor assisted at the scene.

A field sobriety test found Summers to have a blood alcohol content of  greater than.18 percent, which is more than double the legal limit. He was charged with unlawful fleeing of a police officer, aggravated driving while intoxicated, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, failure to comply with lawful order of police, failure to keep right, improper lane use, unsafe lane change and failure to signal.

Summer’s was arraigned before Town Justice Francis Navarra and was released to reappear at a later date.
