General News: CCHS Students Win Bridge Design Contest

May 02, 2011

Two Cornwall Central High School students took first place in the 2011 West Point Bridge Design Contest at the United States Military Academy, each earning a $10,000 scholarship for their work.

The Cornwall students and seven other students from across the nation had two hours to complete two structurally accurate designs using the West Point Bridge Designer Software.

Juniors Charles Paffenroth and Sean Mayer, working under the name Team Zombie Chickens, competed with seven other students from across the country. The cost to execute the final design was an important aspect of the project and the winning design totaled $518,949.71.

Last year’s winners, Josh Hawthorne-Madell and Myles Billard, were also students from Cornwall Central High School. Cornwall Physics teacher, Doug Stack, uses the software as part of his physics curriculum and has created a class ofhighly competitive bridge designers.

The purpose of this high technology, interactive, Internet-based competition is to provide middle school and high school students with a realistic, engaging introduction to engineering through designing structurally accurate bridgesusing an award winning software program. It also fits into the President’s “Educate to Innovate” program and the promotion of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Brigadier General Trainor, Dean of the Academic Board at West Point, was on hand to congratulate the winners and award trophies to each contestant.

All nine contestants also earned laptop computers provided by Dell. The final round teams included: Team Bridge Benders (Geoffrey Ching) of Middletown, NJ, Team Rocket of Morgantown, West Virginia (Peter Chen and Stephen Chen), Team Phage of Oneonta, New York (Alex Levenstein), Team Age Machine of Defiance, Missouri (Andrew Cuccio), and Team Ocoee from Orlando, Florida (Brandon Sanders and Jamie Fan).
