Seven years after he first proposed creating a dog park on a parcel of land owned by the town of Cornwall, town councilman Randy Clark saw his proposal approved on Monday night by his fellow board members.

The next step is to win approval from Scenic Hudson, the environmental group that has the final say on what can and cannot be built on what’s now known as Angola Road Park. Clark has been consulting with the group along the way and is following its recommendation to locate the dog run in the mid-slope section of park.

Clark said he came up with the idea for the dog park not long after the town purchased the 40 acre-parcel from the Cornwall school district in 2003. Since then, the town has built a picnic pavilion and parking lot on the site and placed a couple of benches on the hillside where visitors can enjoy the pastoral views.

Dog Park Will Be Divided in Two Sections

In a proposal presented to the council, Clark laid out the benefits to local residents as well as to the 700 licensed dogs who live in town. The double-gated enclosed dog run set on two acres will allow dogs a place to run and play off-leash while safeguarding the health and safety of all. He proposes a five-foot high fence to surround the run, which will be divided into two sections, for smaller and larger dogs. A water station fed by rainwater, dog waste clean-up stations and covered trashcans are all part of his plan.

Clark, a dog owner his entire life, says that the dog park will increase usage of Angola Road Park and benefit humans who will take more of an ownership interest in maintaining the park. He noted that someone had vandalized the picnic tables during the past year, requiring them to be sanded to remove graffiti.

On Tuesday morning, Clark brought his boxer, Ginger, out to the park where he met a friend, Stacey Pskowski, and her dog, Clover, whom she affectionally refers to as Krapper. While the two dogs played, Clark and Pskowski shared their enthusiasm for the dog run.

“When I started with the dog park, I got laughed at, or howled at, “ Clark said. “then Ed Diana put in a dog park in the county park and the town of Chester put one in and people loved them.” He isn’t convinced that Scenic Hudson will go along with his proposal but says he’ll try another tactic if it nixes the plan. For now, he’s willing to wait and see.

Dear Randy -
Thank you from the tips of our tails to the ends of our noses! We coulcn't be happier to hear about the new dog park. Our humans have offered to help in any way they can - any idea when we can expect to be romping with our friends?

I could understand the need for a dog park if this were an urban area.
If one must have a dog park, please put one in the area by the Hudson River. I, for one, have a lot of difficulty watching where I walk whenever I take a stroll down by the river.Which leads to another question. How many people will take advantage of this dog park? And, like the first comment, in today's economy, are there dollars left over from the people's needs to cover the cost?

Our human wonders how the park has been funded thus far, but as she has said, "Where there's a will..." We are wagging with anticipation and appreciate your efforts on our behalf. Ziggy and Greta
