Cadets and patrons enjoy Dr. Gagnon's talk on the German film, prior to viewing the featured movie for the library's Foreign Film Night, "North Face."

On Wednesday, March 30th, special guest LTC Mark C. Gagnon, Ph.D., presented a brief lecture on German Foreign Films as an introduction to the featured film, North Face. Dr. Gagnon, an expert on German foreign films, is Associate Dean of the International Intellectual Development Division at the USMA-West Point, where he currently teaches a foreign film course.

A number of Dr. Gagnon’s students – cadets at West Point – joined foreign film aficionados and learned about the huge impact German films have had on the international film industry for years. In fact, according to Dr. Gagnon, German directors and German films have long been ‘ahead of the tide’ with respect to the overall film industry.

Cornwall Public Library shows a different foreign film on the fourth Wednesday of most months. Past titles have included The Red Balloon and Le Million. The feature for April 27th is An American in Paris starring Gene Kelly.

“When selecting a film, we look for content that is interesting, informative, and appropriate for most audiences,” said Charlotte Dunaief, the library’s reference and adult services librarian. “If anyone has a movie they would like considered for a future showing, they are welcome to let me know. If we don’t already have the movie as part of our collection, we’ll purchase it and add it to the collection after viewing it during our program. That way we can expose an even greater number of patrons to the genre of foreign films.”

Foreign Film Night at Cornwall Public Library is open to all, no registration required. For more information, call the library at 534-8282.
