General News: NYMA Plans Elementary School Program

March 24, 2011

Eight months after the New York Military Academy was rescued from the brink of closing, the school is set to expand next September when it plans to offer classes for students in grades one through six.

Major Jeffrey Coverdale, NYMA’s acting superintendent, said that he and the board are in discussions with Helen Bunt, who runs Butterhill Day School in Cornwall, to manage the new elementary program. An announcement on the details of the new elementary program is expected in the coming days.

The military academy has been enrolling new cadets throughout the school year as administrators worked to build the academic curriculum and revive the 125-year-old institution. Major Coverdale said that until about 20 years ago NYMA offered what he called a lower school, which led to the idea of re-starting it. Currently there are 85 cadets in the program that serves grades seven through 12.
