General News: Building Inspections On Village Agenda

February 28, 2011

An intermunicipal agreement that would provide town of Cornwall building inspection services to the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson is on the agenda for Monday evening’s village board meeting. Mayor Joseph Gross says that he has gotten an opinion from the New York Council of Mayors that the village board needs to approve the agreement before it can take effect. The mayor stopped the town from performing inspections last week, saying they had not been properly authorized.

Also on the agenda for the last scheduled meeting before the March 15th village election is the residency requirement for the village code enforcement officer. The last building inspector/code enforcement resigned the position in December after learning that he was in violation of the residency requirement. In January, Mayor Gross proposed hiring a new code enforcement officer but the board cautioned against the move because that candidate also lived outside of the village.

The intermunicipal agreement for building inspection services is offered as a temporary measure until the village can hire someone to fill the position on a permanent basis. Last week, the New York Secretary of State ordered the village to provide a written report by February 25th about how it plans to provide code enforcement services. Mayor Gross responded, telling the state that the matter will be addressed at Monday’s board meeting.
