If perseverance is an important quality of an athlete, then it was found in abundance at the home of Aisling Cuffe on Tuesday afternoon, where an Olympic Gold medalist and a dozen Gatorade and ESPN officials traveled through a snowstorm to make a surprise presentation to the Cornwall high school cross country star.

Officials had planned to surprise Cuffe with the 2010-11 Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year award at school on Tuesday. But with the approaching snow storm threatening to close school, they shifted the ceremony to Cuffe’s Cornwall-on-Hudson home, bringing in video crews, photographers and Allyson Felix, an Olympic gold medalist runner and seven time IAAF world champion. Cuffe’s parents conspired to take her to the track at West Point to train and when she returned she walked into her living room transformed for the celebration. Five of her closest friends were also on hand with small video cameras to record her reactions.

Athletic and Academic Achievements Recognized

The Gatorade award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the racetrack. Cuffe has enjoyed an unbeaten season and raced to the national title at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships in December and has won many state and local titles. She competes this Saturday in the USA Cross Country National Championships in San Diego where she will run a 6K race against college-age competitors. The top six winners of that race will go to the Junior World Championships in Spain at the end of March.

At the Cuffe home, Chad Konecky of ESPN, who oversees the selection of athletes for the Gatorade award program described the highly competitive process of choosing the athletes who win national awards. He noted that some great athletes in the past won state Gatorade awards but were passed over for the national titles. Cuffe is also the recipient of the 2010-11 New York State Gatorade Girls Cross Country Award.

Cuffe Invited to ESPY Awards in Los Angeles

Nancy Laroche, manager of the Gatorade Player Awards program, also announced that Cuffe and her family are invited to walk the red carpet at the ESPY Awards this July in Los Angeles. She also noted that Cuffe has a chance of being named the Gatorade Girls National Athlete of the Year at a dinner held prior to the ESPY Awards ceremony.

At Cornwall High School Cuffe maintains an A average. She also is a returning high scorer on the high school math team and a leader in community activities in the Key Club and National Honor Society. Cuffee plans to attend Stanford University in the fall.

"Best Snow Day Ever"

As she stood in her living room on Tuesday holding her newest trophy, Cuffe admitted that she had been anxious to learn who had received the Gatorade award. When she realized that she was the recipient, she was thrilled.  “It was one of the coolest things that ever happened to me,” she said. “This has been my favorite snow day ever.”
