General News: Election Day on Tuesday

November 06, 2006

Tuesday is general election day when voters can cast their ballots for candidates in several high profile races. Of particular interest to people in the village, Cornwall Town Supervisor Richard Randazzo is challenging incumbent Nancy Calhoun, a Republican, for her seat in the State Assembly. If Randazzo wins, his position as town supervisor will be vacated and a new supervisor will be voted in. State senator Bill Larkin, a local resident, is also up for re-election and faces Democratic candidate Chris McBride.

Voters will also get an opportunity to vote for their representatives in Washington, D.C. Representative Sue Kelly, a Republican, is facing a tough challenge from Democrat John Hall, a musician turned politician with a long history of environmental activism. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton is also up for re-election. Her challenger is John Spencer, a Republican from Yonkers.

The governor's race is dominated by Democratic contender Elliot Spitzer, who is running against Republican John Faso. Other races on the ballot this Tuesday include the one for state attorney general, with Democrat Andrew Cuomo vying against Republican Jeanine Pirro. Alan Hevesi is running on the Democratic ticket for State Comptroller against Republican rival J. Christopher Callaghan.

There are also a number of candidates running on the ticket of smaller parties, including the Independence Party, the Conservative Party, the Working Families Party, the Green Party, the Libertarian Party, the Rent is Too High Party, and the Socialist Workers Party.

Voters in the village will also get a chance to decide who will serve as state judges and the country sheriff and coroner. Firefighters are also hoping that a local referendum goes their way when voters decide whether members of the Storm King Fire Engine Company #2 will get a raise in monthly benefits from $400 to $800.

Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Click on the image at right to see what the ballot will look like.
