General News: Al Mazzocca Announces Candidacy for Mayor

Cornwall town councilman Al Mazzocca is returning to his roots in the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson, where he said today that he has decided to run for mayor of the village in the March 15th election. Mazzocca, who is 83, served two terms as village trustee in the early 1980s before he was elected to the town council.

Mazzocca told News from Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson that he is confident that he can win what is shaping up to be a three-way race.

Last month, Brendan Coyne, a former school board president and current Lions Club president, announced his candidacy. On December 28th, Coyne and Mazzocca picked up petitions to run for the mayoral office. Incumbent mayor Joseph Gross also picked up a petition that day, marking his intention to run for a third term. Petitions signed by a minimum of 75 village residents must be submitted by February 8th in order for a candidate to appear on the ballot.

In a letter last month, he listed a number of issues that he favors, including keeping two full-time police officers, paying village bills, getting workers back inside the DPW building and reviving the comprehensive plan. Asked if he could name one overriding reason for throwing his hat into the ring, Mazzocca said it is to bring unity to a trustee board that has been fractured by dissention for the past nine motnhs.

“I think I can pull the board together and get it moving,” Mazzocca said. “There has been so much time taken over petty arguments that a lot of the important business has fallen by the wayside. It is not that there will be no disagreements, but they will be done in a gentlemanly manner and then we can move ahead.”

Mazzocca also said that although there is no law against holding public office in both the town and the village that, if elected, he would expect to leave the town council seat in order to focus on village business.  He was elected in the town on the Republican party ticket but in the village election, nominations can be made without traditional party affiliation but a required to supply a name for an independent party that appears on the petition.  Mazzocca said he has not yet decided what that name will be.

Comments:

I'm still waiting for some hopefuls for a trustees position to pick up a petition.
