A Cornwall high school graduate is sharing her insight into a common practice that is robbing the childhood of children in the West African nation of Ghana. In a presentation at the Cornwall Public Library on Monday, January 10th at 7 pm, Samantha Kelly will present a 15-minute documentary entited “Volta” that raises awareness of child trafficking and child labor on Lake Volta.

Kelly made the documentary with fellow students from New York University who traveled with her to Ghana in 2010. While there, the students visited Lake Volta, which lies in the northeast region of the country, and witnessed first-hand the use of young children in the most menial tasks of the fishing industry. Using interviews with slaves, slave masters and chief in the region, they created this documentary the reveals how widespread child trafficking and child labor is on the lake.

Registration is requested – in person, by phone (534-8282), or by e-mail ([email protected]). The program is free and open to the public.
