If you want to purchase local, grass-fed beef, the Cornwall Community Co-op is making that possible through a special program with Kiernan Farm, a family-run farm in Gardiner, NY.

Customers may order directly from the farm via the Internet, then pick up and pay for their purchases in person at the Grail Center in Cornwall-on-Hudson.

Co-op volunteer Barbara Perry says the first bulk purchase of the grass-fed beef was a great success. .  “Marty and Thelma Kiernan set up at the Grail and handled the transactions.  They didn’t just hand over their products; they also answered cooking questions and offered recipes.” Kiernan Farm beef is grass-fed and finished in a free-range setting—practices that result in healthier cattle. And, because it’s located nearby, the revenues from the farm stay closer to home.

“The buying club is just part of the co-op’s mission of expanding access to local, wholesome food and other products to Cornwall and nearby communities,” said Nancy Proyect, the co-op’s President. “Our members met and agreed to make the buying club available to the general public, not just members—and we have more events coming up.”

With the success of the first order, the Co-Op has decided to arrange pickups on the first and third Wednesdays of each month.  Orders must be received by the Monday before sale day.   “We’ve worked with Kiernan Farm to make the ordering process very simple, and it’s open to everyone who wants to be sure where their food is grown,” said Ms. Perry.  The co-op’s website (www.cornwallcoop.com) hosts a price sheet and an online order form. The next sale day is Wednesday, January 5, 2011.
