General News: Cornwall Celebrates Star Runner Cuffe

December 22 was Aisling Cuffe Day in Cornwall. Then again, many days in 2010 belong to the nation’s best high school cross country runner.
Fellow students, faculty, administrators, dignitaries, friends and family gathered Wednesday night at Cornwall Central High School to pay tribute to the senior who garnered the top spot in every race she ran this year. Cuffe, who is in the top 10 of her class academically, will attend Stanford University on a running scholarship next year.
A parade of speakers laid accolades at her feet. Noting that he had never met anyone who was the best in America in any field, Orange County Legislator Kevin Hines said he was honored to meet Cuffe. State legislative aide and former Cornwall school board member Mary Kramer brought a proclamation from the governor and noted Cuffe’s Irish heritage.
The district also saluted Cuffe’s two running coaches, Dave Feuer and Brian Creeden. Before the ceremony, Feuer remarked that he was “blessed” to have coached her.
“Aisling is so self-motivated,” Feuer said. He added that the experience made him a better coach as he helped Cuffe compete with runners on a national stage.
Town Supervisor Kevin Quigley’s proclamation noted the support of Cuffe’s family, school and the entire Cornwall community. Indeed, the ceremony followed a school assembly during which her fellow students applauded her accomplishments. And once again an audience heard the two-minute audio clip of the announcer enthusiastically describing Cuffe effort as she ran away from the competition to win the national cross country championship Dec. 11 in San Diego. She finished the 3.1 mile course in 16.53, the sixth fastest time in the race’s history.
The ceremony took place before the championship basketball game of the Glen M McGinnis Holiday Tournament. And the crowd gave Cuffe a standing ovation as she graciously accepted the many citations honoring her determination. She thanked her family and the community and said she couldn’t have reached her goal without her coaches.
Her parents, Ronald Cuffe, a cardiologist, and Marie O’Hanrahan, a native of County Roscommon, Ireland, and her sister, Dara, also a runner, and brother Conor, stood by her, smiling throughout the ceremony. Before the ceremony, Dr. Cuffe humbly expressed his appreciation for the support given his talented daughter.
“As Aisling traveled around the country, we often heard her introduced as ‘Cornwall’s Aisling Cuffe,’” Dr. Cuffe said. “Cornwall’s support has been overwhelming. The Cornwall community truly adopted Aisling.”
