It’s official! The New Year’s Eve ball drop in the village square will be back on the night of December 31st thanks to a group of 19 volunteers who want to keep the tradition alive.

Kris Seiz, one of the original members of the group that started the ball drop in 2001, is spearheading the effort and she informed the village board on Monday night of their efforts.

Seiz said the ball will be dropped from the Storm King Fire Engine Co.’s ladder truck, which will be parked next to the gazebo on Hudson Street. Ray Yannone, who constructed the five-foot wide glittering ball with his son, Ray, Jr., will lend the ball for the festivities once again. Led and Wynn Klosky will make the numbers 2011 that will be placed on top of the ladder.

Yannone, who has dropped the ball from the roof of his Storm King Theatre for the past three years, decided not to stage the event again. Yannone had added entertainment, including an Elvis impersonator and a comedian, to the line-up and he said the effort was getting out of hand for him.

Kris Seiz said that music will be performed this year by Mike Annan on acoustic guitar and that Jimi Hendrix’s version of “Star Spangled Banner” will be performed just before midnight, followed by the traditional “Auld Lang Syne.”

“It’s a community event,” Seiz told the board. “And it will be dedicated to Bobby Barton, who did the music for the first ball drop ten years ago.” Barton is largely paralyzed from suffered a stroke several months ago but keeps informed of local Cornwall events, she said.
