General News: Coyne Announces Plan to Run for Village Mayor

He’s been president of the Cornwall Central School District Board of Education and of the Cornwall Lions Club as well as chair of the Cornwall Independence Day Committee. He’s worked in public relations and reporting, including covering stories for News from Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson and the Cornwall Local.
Now Brendan Coyne says that he wants to be mayor of the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson. On Tuesday, Coyne announced that he is throwing his hat into the race for mayor under the banner of Cornwall-on-Hudson United. An election will be held on March 15, 2011.
“I think I can bring some skills to the table that can help the village move on,” Coyne said after announcing his bid for office in a press release. In his statement, he pointed to important issues facing Cornwall-on-Hudson, including the future of New York Military Academy, putting the Department of Public Works facility back online and developing a new master plan. He believes that the most pressing issue at the moment, however, is developing a board whose members respect one another and work together for the betterment of the village and its residents.
“As I see it, we should be working together,” Coyne said. “I proved I can do that on the school board and I think I can do it again.”
Coyne, 62, has lived in the village for more than 20 years and raised three children here as he worked as the director of public relations at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh. He left that position in June. He served nine years on the board of education and has participated in many civic and community organizations.
“Cornwall-on-Hudson has been a wonderful place for me to live, raise a family and participate in community affairs. I’d like to have the opportunity to help ensure it continues to thrive,” he said in his statement.
Candidates for two trustee seats and the mayor may begin gathering signatures on a petition to get on the ballot starting December 28. Mayor Joseph Gross, who has held the office since 2007, has not yet said if he plans to run for a third term.
