The end of a tradition may be approaching in Cornwall-on-Hudson. Ray Yannone said on Tuesday that he is probably not going to drop the ball from the roof of his building this New Year’s Eve, a tradition started by a band of local merrymakers in 2001.

That year, Johnny Vornlocher made the first ball out of hoola hoops with lights wrapped around them, Chris Garti created the illuminated numbers, Roy Sears donated the lift and Chris Phair, Chris Mee and Kris Seiz, among others, pitched in to bring the ball onto the roof of Nicky’s restaurant at Storm King Theatre. It was then dropped ceremoniously just before the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve.

In 2007, Nicky Correa closed the restaurant bearing his name and Ray Yannone’s daughter, Elizabeth, led an effort to keep the ball drop tradition alive at her father’s building. That year, her brother, Ray Jr., constructed a new ball with 1, 500 light bulbs. The committee also invited an Elvis impersonator to entertain the crowd before midnight. After that, the tradition started attracting ever larger crowds in the village square.

This past year, Ray Yannone booked a comedian to join Elvis on the outdoor deck of the theater and some of the revelers found his jokes inappropriate for the family-oriented crowd. Yannone said that he received complaints about last year’s ball drop and that he decided it is not worth the effort any more. “It is quite an expense and a quite a process,” he said, adding that the closing of Drew’s on the Square, a restaurant on the ground floor of the building, this summer contributed to his decision not to drop the ball again this year.

Comments:

Well. It's too bad this has to end. Thank you to all of you who have made it possible in years past. And have a Happy New Year anyway.

I can get lights! Who wants to help? Who has a suitable rooftop in the Village Square? Will Mr. Yannone, who has only been involved for the the last two years of this grand tradition still let us use his roof? Is the hydraulic lift still up there? Maybe SKFE and their bucket truck? HELP!

Together with the Tree, it's the nicest of the holiday traditions here.

Frankly, I liked it best when entertainment was just a DJ and the ball stayed on the roof. For that, little more than permission is required to continue a wonderful community activity.

If we can get that from Mr. Yannone, I'm in to help.

Yes Jon - and that DJ is the fabulous Bobby Barton. Everybody donated their time and efforts.

It's good to see the comments shifting from "ain't it a shame" to "how can I help make it happen".

This says something great about the Village! Let's make it happen! and thanks to Ray Yannone for doing it for us these past years -- what help do you need, Ray, so it can continue!

Is is money or just the location?

what? no more annual policeman hug? Kris, mobilize the troops! let me know what I can do to help. There are enough restaurants with t.v.s in the square, maybe we can just converge and celebrate at the pivotal moment?? Although having the ball in the square is certainly a gem. sigh, I just don't get it. The folks who complained didn't have to pay for a train, parking, an admission ticket, a coat check, a meal ticket - nothing! If they did not like the entertainment they were free to go home and watch Dick Clark. It is about the people gathering and celebrating together.

We're going for it! I just got the OK from the Fire Department to use their bucket truck! Ray Yannone is going to let us use the ball again. Johnny Vornlocher is going to help make the numbers, and I can use all the help I can get! Who wants to be on the committee? Call me at 534-7800 and we will set up a meeting. We just need the Mayor and the Board to let us do this. I will be in Florida on the 20th, the night of the next Village Board Meeting. I will send in a letter asking permission. Please attend this meeting and support this effort! Thanks to all for your letters and support! :)
