Two student artists have been named winners by the Cornwall Lions Club for their creations submitted to the 23rd annual Peace Poster Contest.

The work of Christopher Robinson and Joshua Hwang was selected from that of approximately 40 Cornwall Central Middle School students who participated in the contest under the direction of art teacher Gina Dianis. Lion William F. Geiser coordinated the contest for the Cornwall Lions Club, which sponsored the contest for the first time this year. Three local artists, Sue Fink, Barbara Gioia and Robert Rosenberger, judged the entries.

The Cornwall Lions Club will award $100 to the first place winner and $50 to the second place winner. Both winners will receive family memberships in the Storm King Art Center, courtesy of the art center.

The Cornwall winner will move onto the next level of the contest, Lions District 20-O, which includes Orange, Dutchess, Sullivan, Ulster, Greene and Columbia counties. The District 20-O winner will move onto the multiple district level and that winner will compete internationally.

Lions International anticipates 350,000 entries worldwide.

The grand winner will receive $5,000 and a trip with his/her family to the award ceremony on Lions Day with the United Nations. There will also be 23 Merit Award Winners who will receive $500 and a certificate of achievement.

“The Cornwall Lions Club believes the Peace Poster Contest provides our young people with an opportunity to think about peace and to express themselves through art,” said Brendan G. Coyne, president of the club.
