Jay Townsend of Cornwall-on-Hudson, a candidate of the Republican and Conservative Parties, lost his bid to replace U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer in Washington in the general election held on Tuesday. With 96% of the votes counted, Democrat Schumer held 65.5% of the vote to Townsend’s 32.9%.

In four upstate counties, however, Townsend held a majority of the votes – from 53.7% to Schumer’s 44.6% in Tioga County to 49.2% to Schumer’s 48.5% in Wyoming County. In Orange County, Townsend had 42.4% of the vote to Schumer’s 56.2%.

Townsend, who watched election returns on Tuesday night with Republic Party leaders at the Hilton Hotel in Manhattan, told News from Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson on Tuesday that after the election he looked forward to getting some rest from the non-stop campaign trail.

Comments:

Our neighbor Jay ran a great campaign and was very effective in his debate with Schumer. Definitely time to take a rest, Jay!
