Voting in the mid-term general elections got underway Tuesday morning in Cornwall with virtually no problems. Election custodian Ray Torraca reported that by mid-day no problems had been reported with the new paper ballot voting machines, other than a couple of paper jams. “You just push a button if you get a jam,” he said, “and that takes care of it.”

Jay Townsend, who is challenging Chuch Schumer for his seat in the U.S. Senate, came to vote in his hometown, Cornwall-on-Hudson, shortly after 11 am, accompanied by his wife, Rebecca. After casting his ballot, Townsend seemed elated and told News from Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson “a lot of people are going to be surprised today.”

Townsend, the Republican and Conservative party candidate, is running in an election when members of his parties are forecast to do better than Democrats in many states nationwide. Still, in a Marist poll released on October 22 Democrat,Schumer had the support of 63% of the state’s likely voters while Townsend had 35%.

Polls close today at 9 pm.
