General News: Preliminary Town Budget Sets 5% Tax Hike

October 30, 2010

Taxes for residents of the town of Cornwall would go up over five percent if the preliminary $10.87 million budget is adopted next month. The town council is presenting the budget at a public hearing on Wednesday, November 3 at 7 pm at Town Hall.

Town supervisor Kevin Quigley said that he and the other council members made cuts across the board in an effort to keep costs – and taxes – down. “Our goal is to keep the tax rate down as much as possible,” Quigley said on Thursday. “I’d like to see a flat line but you can’t do a lot about some cost.”

If the preliminary budget is adopted without any changes, the tax increase will be $0.28 per thousand of assessed value. That would translate into a $56 increase for a property assessed at $200,000 and a $112 increase for a property assessed at $400,000, Quigley said.

Copies of the preliminary budget are available for review in the town clerk’s office during business hours.

Comments:

Ok, taxes are always rising, but homes should be re-assessed as the values are decreasing.

My COLA (cost 0f living increase)is frozen for two years, perhaps longer, and now there's to be a tax increase? It never stops does it? I guess this can be filed under the "death tax" too, huh?

Unfortunately Mr. Wortmann our supervisor is also the local undertaker so he gets your "death tax" and then some! Who said "nothing is certain but death and taxes"....Kevin Quigley?
