The new food market coming to the Cornwall Plaza promises to provide the ingredients that have been missing from Cornwall residents’ taste buds.

Cornwall Farms will open in Cornwall Plaza in early November, according to Ed Jennings, who will operate the market with his brothers, Chris and Frank. Jennings promised a “gorgeous” store, inside and out as he described plans for the new store in an interview Friday inside the former Key Food Marketplace, which closed in March after eight years of operation.

The store was abuzz with workers gutting the old store, which opened in 1960 as a Grand Union supermarket. Hammers were banging and blow torches were aflame as they tore down walls and pulled up floor tiles, down to the concrete foundation.

Fresh Produce, Salads to be Featured

“The main focus will be fresh produce,” said Jennings. “Produce will be the first items you see when you enter the store. Organic, locally grown produce will be a staple.”

Cornwall Farms will feature a “high-end, New York City-style” deli, he said, will offer 20 to 30 different salads. “Salads are our specialty,” said Jennings.

The store will have a bakery and feature a daily delivery of Italian and specialty breads from Terranova Bakery in the Bronx. It will also include a meat department and a coffee bean station.

Store Will Create 30 to 40 Jobs

The Jennings brothers have run other supermarkets and currently operate a store in Putnam Valley. They plan to open another in Pleasant Valley in December and are considering the former Key Food Marketplace in Highland Falls. Jennings said that he and his brothers had tried to take over the Cornwall store two years ago but couldn’t work out a deal.

He also said prices will be competitive with the three supermarkets in Vails Gate and that it will employ 30 to 40 people in part-time and full-time positions. The Jennings have started to accept resumes for managers, stock clerks and cashiers. Interested persons should go to craigslist, click on New York City and jobs, and type in 1979169087.

This is WONDERFUL news! Thank you Jennings Brothers. If the store is as good as you say it will be, I will be supporting your venue! Wishing you all the best : )

Fantastic. I know I'll be in there when I'm in town and my parents will definitely enjoy not having to schlep all the way to Hannaford's. Excellent development for the town.

There's Sally's Fish Market in Newburgh. Fresh from the Fulton Fish Market every day.

Awesome news! It'll be nice to have another option that isn't a chain.

Just wanted to dispel any myths about fish. All fish now comes from the Hunts Point fish market in the Bronx. They are no longer at Fulton Street. It all comes in FROZEN even the ones that go to the fancy restaurants in Manhattan that charge you an arm an a leg. Believe me it's safer that way. As soon as it thaws it's as fresh as when it came out of the water. I know someone who worked at the fish market for over 30 years. You want fresh fish off the boat, go to Islamorada, Fla. in the Keys.

Thanks for the clarification about the fish.
