October is turning into bicycle month, with two great opportunities to pedal around Orange County and contribute to a good cause at the same time. An opportunity to voice your thoughts on bicycling and walking in the county also comes up mid-month.

On Sunday, October 3, the Country Roads Fall Foliage Bike Tour pushes off from the historic Brotherhood Winery in Washingtonville and riders can choose routes of 14, 24, 48 or 69 miles along rural roads that highlight the scenic natural areas and rolling farmland of Orange County.

One of the three beneficiaries of this bike tour, the Orange County Land Trust, works to preserve open spaces like those enjoyed on the tour. The other two beneficiaries of this year’s tour are Occupations, Inc. and Sanctuary for Animals. Occupations, Inc has partnered with the Orange County Bicycle Club to present the tour.

All rides begin and end at Brotherhood Winery with entertainment, prizes, music and a picnic banquet provided by Loughran’s Irish Pub of Salisbury Mills. Specially labeled bottles of Country Roads Fall Foliage wine, produced for the event by Brotherhood Winery, will be available for purchase. Start times are staggered so that participants return to the winery for the festivities at about the same time.

Registration information is available at www.ocbicycleclub.org. Fees are $30 per person/$5 per child in advance and $40 per person/$10 per child the day of the event.

Storm King "Cannibal" Race on October 10th

Bicycle racers are lining up to join cycling star Evelyn Stevens in a test of racing speed and ability on Storm King Highway, a 7.1 mile strip of Route 218 on Sunday, October 10th. The group Transportation Alternatives has dubbed the race, Storm King “Cannibal,” named after five-time Tour de France winner Eddy "The Cannibal" Merckx.

Racers will be timed, one by one, on the course with rolling hills, hairpin turns and spectacular views of the Hudson River.

"It's a rare opportunity to experience a real European-style time trial," said race director John Eustice, founder of Sparta Cycling. "The course is reminiscent of a stage in the south of France-it's about bike handling skill and deep fitness." Bryan’s Bikes in Cornwall is another sponsor of the event.

After the time trial, Transportation Alternatives will lead a 34-mile ride through Harriman State Park followed by a luncheon near Anthony's Nose in Garrison, N.Y. To find out how to sign up, visit transalt.org.

"Racing along a car-free highway is perhaps the most fun way possible to support vital bike advocacy campaigns that are making it safer for New Yorkers to ride," says ride leader Paul Steely White, executive director of Transportation Alternatives.

Open House on Bicycle, Pedestrian Planning

Local biking – and walking – advocates may also want to attend an Open House with the Orange County Department of Planning on Thursday, October 14 to talk about their ideas for the Orange County Bicycle, Pedestrian, Non-Motorized Transportation Master Plan. The county planning department is updating the master plan and seeks input on improvements to walking, biking, and all modes of non-motorized transportation in your community and across the County.

Department planners aim to create a plan that encompasses the needs of all pedestrians, cyclists, equestrians and others who currently use – or would like to use– non-motorized transportation such as non-car owners, older adults, those walking to school, connecting to trains and buses, getting to work or shopping, or using trails and waterways for recreation and fun.

The groups’s early focus will be on the planning area of the Newburgh Area Transportation and Land Use Study. The Open House is being held at the village of Montgomery Senior Center at 36 Bridge Street in Montgomery from 4 to 8 pm, with short presentations at 4:30, 5:30 and 7 pm.  Visit www.orangecountygov.com/planning/octc for more information.
