General News: Sands Ring to Celebrate Next Saturday

Have some old-fashioned fun and celebrate local heritage.
Have some old-fashioned fun and celebrate local heritage.
September 26, 2010

From Sally Stanley, president of the Friends of Sands Rings Homestead Museum

Friends of Sands Ring Homestead Museum is hosting a birthday celebration at Sands Ring Homestead Museum in Cornwall on Saturday, October 2, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. This year marks the 250th birthday of the Homestead.

Built in 1760 by Nathaniel Sands, this historic structure is one of the oldest Dutch colonials still standing in the Hudson Valley. Occupied by members of the Sands and Ring families until 1907, the Homestead now serves as a museum. For over 35 years, its staff has provided colonial learning and activity programs for area school children and community groups. From April to November, the Homestead is open for tours and other community events.

The birthday party begins at 1 p.m. with a variety of indoor and outdoor activities. Families are invited to make a scarecrow for their yard. Children will learn to spin a wool bracelet with a drop spindle. Hoops will be available for hoop games on the lawn. Participants can plant an herb seed to take home. Live music of the period will be played by noted musician Rosalinda Perez. Sands Family stories will be shared by the museum staff. At 3 p.m. the community is invited for cake and birthday song.

The suggested donation is $25 per family, or $10 per individual. Reservations are required so that we can plan accordingly. Call (845) 534-4829 or send an email to [email protected]. Donation by cash or check will be accepted at the door. All proceeds benefit our New Roof Fund. Sands Ring Recipe Books will also be available. The Ralph E. Ogden Foundation has provided a challenge grant to help finance the replacement of our 50-year-old roof.

Friends of Sands Ring Homestead Museum, a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization, invites the community to help us celebrate this historic event and raise the money for our new roof. It’s not only Sands Ring family history; it’s our history, too.

Sands Ring Homestead Museum is located in Cornwall at 180 Main Street across from Town Hall. Donations can be mailed to Friends of Sands Ring Homestead Museum, P.O. Box 226, Cornwall, NY 12518. To learn more about the Homestead or to become a member of Friends of Sands Ring Homestead Museum, visit our website: www.sandsring.org.
