General News: Mayor's Advisory Group Holds Meeting

September 24, 2010

Cornwall-on-Hudson Mayor Joseph Gross has formed an advisory committee to look at the issues involved in the construction of the department of public works building and on Monday he announced that the five-member group had started meeting. The mayor said that five men have been appointed to the advisory committee: George Berger, Jonathan Chase, Peter Erwin, Andrew Maroney and Dennis Sugrue.

In July, Mayor Gross said he needs the group “to deal with the DPW building and the difficulties we’ve had in the legal area.”

Mayor Gross reported on Monday that one of the members of the advisory committee questioned why the money from the sale of the old DPW building on Hudson Street was added to the general fund rather than being set aside to directly offset the cost of building the new structure.

The mayor said questions also surfaced about why the contractor on the new building received a hefty down payment and if the department of environmental conservation should have been contacted about building on the site of a closed dump.

The mayor did not indicate what steps would be taken next but the village board has been attempting to resolve construction problems at the DPW building for the past six months. The board trustees are in the process of hiring a law firm to look into legal issues involving the building.

Mr. Argenio, as with anything there is going to be a multitude of opinions on any given circumstance. And of course everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I viewed your link and in my opinion Trustee Kane was merely aksing if it was proper for the mayor to waste the time of the public as well as the elected members of the board to discuss items that his personal advisory commitee had discussed. Again just my opinion and perception, but is it proper for the mayor to discuss items of his personal advisory commitee that were appointed by him personally and not the board or better yet not the voters of the village?

I am just offering the people who could not get there the chance to see it and form there own opinion. Mr Kane says " am sorry for inturupting" its a fact. The lawyer said that the advisory committee is legal and a report was legal and appropriate. just the facts as they were recorded.

It is also my opinion that $250,000 potentialy misapreopreated funds is a serious problem. The board resolution was to help pay for the building and it was placed in the general fund and spent. That is my opinion formed by the facts and I am happy to share the information with others.Furthermore there are other serios problems like Who made the final payment without a C.O.?
