The Harvest Market, the Cornwall Community Cooperative’s retail store on Hudson Street in Cornwall-on-Hudson, will cease operations at the end of this month, following a vote by the members of the co-op on Sunday.
Co-op board president Nancy Proyect said many factors contributed to the decision, but that the bottom line is that poor sales couldn’t support the continued operation of the store.
As part of the move approved by members, the co-op will continue to exist with a focus on education and look for new innovative ways to fulfill its mission of serving as a “sustainable cooperative enterprise committed to increasing the accessibility of local, affordable, wholesome, ethically-produced products and cultivating a spirit of belonging and well-being in our communities.”
Some members were clearly disappointed to see the market close and suggested ways to re-invigorate the operation. As part of the decision, the co-op will explore the possibility of re-introducing a buying club to provide fresh, local food to members. The co-op will continue to run the successful farmers’ market held each Wednesday at Cornwall town hall and may consider re-opening a retail market in the future.

I just wish the farmers market was open later in the day. It was really nice having that available, but the hours are difficult for most people who work.
