General News: Primary Elections Next Tuesday

The political season is heating up with primary elections on September 14, leading to the midterm elections in November when local voters will be choosing representatives on by a state and national level.

The primary election next week will feature candidates running for their party’s endorsements in the race for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general and Congression.

Locally, the bid by Cornwall-on-Hudson resident Jay Townsend to become the Republican Party’s candidate for U.S. senate is attracting attention. Townsend is in a dead heat for the spot with Gary Berntsen for the nomination. The winner of next Tuesday’s primary will face incumbent Democratic senator Charles Schumer in November.

Also on the senate side, Kirsten Gillibrand is up for the Democratic Party spot to return to her seat in the U.S. Senate, facing Gail Goode on the Democratic side.  Seeking to challenge on the Republic ticket for senate is Bruce Blakeman, Joseph DioGuardi and David Malpass.

The race in the 19th Congressional District is also heating up, with Republicans Nan Hayworth and Neil DiCarlo on the ballot to become their party’s candidate who will challenge incumbent Democratic representative John Hall. Hayworth and DiCarlo debate locally on Wednesday, September 9 in Washingtonville.

Candidates Rick Lazio and Carl Paladino are vying to be the Republican Party’s candidate for governor of the state of New York and Lazio and Ralph Lorigo will be on the ballot for the Conservative Party spot for governor.

Gregory Edwards, who was chosen by Lazio as his running mate, and Thomas Ognibene, Paladino's running mate, are competing to be on the Republican ticket for lieutenant governor.

The Democratic Party candidates have created a crowded field in the race for state attorney general. Five people are vying for a spot on the Democratic ticket: Richard Brodsky, Sean Coffey, Eric Dinallo, Kathleen Rice and Eric Schneiderman.

Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, September 14th. Locally, votes may be cast at these polling places: Cornwall Village Hall Meeting Room Munger Cottage (River Light Park) Mountainville Fire House Cornwall Ambulance Building Bethlehem Community Center Idlewild Creek Apts. Community Room.
