July 27, 2010

U.S. Representative John Hall (D-19th) visited Mama Theresa Deli in Vail’s Gate on Monday to talk about the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010 that was signed into law last week by President Obama.

As part of the bill, small business owners, like Jim DeStefano, owner of Mama Theresa’s Deli, will be protected against high credit card fees.   A Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was created by the new legislation that will protect consumers from hidden fees, abusive or unfair terms and deceptive practices. Also, the agency will oversee the enforcement of federal laws intended to ensure the fair, equitable and nondiscriminatory access to credit for individuals and communities. A hotline will be created to allow consumers to report problems with financial services.

During his visit to Mama Theresa’s Deli, Hall was joined by John D’Ambrosio, president of the Orange County Chamber of Commerce and Faith Piatt, director of housing services, Orange County Rural Development Advisory Corp. Piatt welcomed the new regulations on the mortgage industry, which require lenders to make sure that a borrower can pay back their mortgage and to disclose the maximum a consumer could pay on a variable rate mortgage.

Hall, a Democrat who is running for a third term this November against Republican challenger Nan Hayworth, praised the new bill, saying “This new law is about whose side you’re on. I’m on the side of working families and protecting consumers from fraud and providing New Yorkers with financial security.”

Comments:

Really? Vote him out of office because his staff doesn't do a good job announcing upcoming hand-shaking events?

Are you expecting him to answer questions and hold an impromptu press conference or something, or are you interested in protesting?

Why not try going to public meetings instead of trying to ask questions at these fluffy PR events. Better yet schedule a meeting with him. You can do it from his website.
