Lovers of fresh produce had a field day on Wednesday at the farmers market on the grounds of Cornwall town hall, the first of what promises to be a weekly event until October.

Seven vendors came to the inaugural market and they brought with them an astonishing array of fresh fruits and vegetables, flowers, grass-fed beef, artisan bread, homemade berry pies and handmade mozzarella cheese.

Shoppers Came Despite the Heat

While the temperatures headed to the stratosphere, local Cornwall shoppers braved the heat to visit the farmers, many of whom were giving free samples of their goods.

Chip Kent introduced shoppers to the Oashiwasi plum, one of several varieties of the fruit that he and his family grow on the Locust Grove Fruit Farm in Milton. The currants, raspberries and plums offered this week are just a few of the fruits that he will have for sale over the coming months.

Mike Panzarello introduced his award-winning mozzarella, handing out slices of the melt-in-your mouth cheese to willing tasters. Panzarello also offered homemade crab cakes, tomato sauces and at least six types of artisan breads.

Flowers and Fresh Food Galore

From Middletown, one woman brought her beautiful flowers in small containers and hanging baskets.

The Dagele Brothers farm from Florida, N.Y. offered piles of produce brimming with just-picked freshness. While there were no brothers in sight, Mrs. Dagele presided over the operation, assisted by three or four teenage nieces. They sold sugar snap peas, carrots, onions, radishes, lettuces, Kirby cucumbers, fennel, zucchini, tomatoes and more.

Homemade Pies, too!

With grass-fed beef and sausages and exotic mushrooms for sale, you could purchase enough fresh food for several days of healthy eating, then top it off with a homemade blueberry pie cooked by Shelly Grey of Grey Farms in New Windsor.

The Cornwall Community Co-operative is running the weekly farmers market at town hall each Wednesday. The co-op also runs its own market at 208 Hudson Street in Cornwall-on-Hudson where you can find more fresh produce and organic food on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Comments:

I am new to the town and love fresh produce and meat/cheese, etc...

But like many of you, I work during the day and every weekday until 8pm.

Can someone put some thought into doing this on a weekends?? I know the co-op has a building and it will be open but it seems like a shame that a small percentage of residents will get the opportunity to shop and buy at the Town Hall.

It seems to me that getting people interested on the weekends would drive more customer traffic to the main facility in C-O-H during the week, not the other way around.

Just a thought.

Good luck, farmers... keep up the good work.

On my way to work Wednesday morning I, too, was a little envious of those who could take the time in the middle of the day to shop for fresh and organic produce. Some of these vendors also do the Goshen farmers market where I can get to them on a lunch hour every Friday. Once you've had fresh produce it is hard to go back to the cross country truck shipped supermarket stuff... maybe you have a friend or neighbor that can shop for you?? Otherwise stop by the co-op on Saturday...

Gray Family Farm has a farmstand on Saturdays from 10-3...right off Route 94, diagonal from Shore Drive and the Cumberland going towards Salisbury Mills. They have all natural fruits, veggies, organic free range eggs, grass fed beef, pork, and of course homemade pies and goodies.

I too am very excited about the farmers market! However, I work during the day and won?t be able to get there. If the farmers market can?t be done on the weekend how about in the afternoon until early evening. That way people can stop by after work. Just a thought, I would love to be able to go to a farmers market in cornwall.
