General News: Cornwall Celebrates 234 Years of Independence

June 30, 2010

The Cornwall Independence Day Committee is putting the finishing touches on a full day and evening of fun and festivities for Sunday, July 4, at the Town Hall center.

The community is honoring Cornwall native Glen M. McGinnis, longtime Cornwall educator and athletics coach, as grand marshal in a 5 p.m. parade.

The day starts with breakfast at Highland Engine Co. and continues with the fun-filled Pet Show, presented by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and children’s games. Students’ patriotic art work, judged by artist Sue Fink, will be on display all day and evening.

Pony rides will be available on the east side of Rings Pond. A pie eating contest will take place in afternoon, which will also feature Sam the Magician and music by student band Black Sheep and the classic rock band Haywyre.

Cornwall’s church bells will ring for several minutes at 2 p.m. to recall the way Americans celebrated their independence in 1776. And in the evening, a Flag Ceremony, featuring the a cappella groups Love Notes and Treble in Paradise, will honor America and precede the annual pageant, recalling Cornwall history.

The Main Street Mile, with more than 100 runners, will precede the parade, in the late afternoon. The parade will feature replicas of the Half Moon, the ship on which Henry Hudson explored the river that bears his name, and Fulton’s steamboat.

The Cornwall Lions will conduct their annual lobster sale in the middle of the day. The committee will present its annual crafts fair all day and community organizations will be on hand to discuss their work. Across from the town hall, the Sands Ring Homestead will be open in the middle of the day.

The Cornwall Reunion Band will perform just before the fireworks, which will start about 9:45 p.m.

The committee will be selling items all day and night to raise the more than $30,000 required for the celebration. A coin drop will be conducted in the evening. Sales of Yankees and dinner raffle tickets; T-shirts featuring the Cornwall train trestle; loop-a-lites; and water and soda all go toward the day’s expenses. Donations may be sent to: CIDC, P.O. Box 542, Cornwall, NY 12518.

The committee extends its gratitude to the Town of Cornwall for providing police, grounds and sanitation services and the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson for providing police services.

The celebration will carry on even if the weather is less than perfect.  Visit www.cornwal4th.org or call 845-541-1795 for more details.

Comments:

I LOVE the Cornwall Independence Day celebration!!!
I remember when it was held on Donohue's farm and the pageant had a horse back rider who played Paul Revere and the whole town spread out blankets to sit on all across the field and the burgers and the corn on the cob and watermelon and the parade with all the bands and floats and people passed out it was so hot and we had a big, rotund police chief who rode a horse,,, and the FIREWORKS where everybody said "oooooooohhhh" and "aaaaaaahhhhh" with each display...it is truly one of the joys of living in Cornwall - and if you haven't bought a ticket or a shirt or a loopie light, you better pony up, kid, 'cause this party is WORTH it!
