June 17, 2010

The Cornwall Lions Club installed Brendan Coyne as its new president on Tuesday night. Coyne, who has been a member of the Lions Club for 26 years, will serve in that office from 2010-11.

Coyne’s new position co-incides with other changes in the life of a person long involved in Cornwall community affairs. This month he steps down after nine years as a member of the Cornwall Central School District Board of Education, including one term as its president. He has also been part of the Cornwall Cares About Youth and the 2001 Cornwall Challenge prepared with the Glynwood Center.

Coyne Also Serves as Chairman of the Cornwall 4th July

One hat he still wears is that of chairman of the Cornwall Independence Day Committee, which oversees all the activities on the Fourth of July. Coyne says that although the Lions Club has a major fundraiser at the celebration where it sells more than 800 cooked and live lobsters, he expects to maintain his focus on the Independence Day events.

Asked why he dedicates so much time to public service, Coyne said that he gets a lot of satisfaction from being part of these activities and thinks he is pretty good at getting people to work together and collaborate.

“We have 35 people on the Fourth of July committee with different ideas, backgrounds and skills and it is an enjoyable challenge to me to try to pull these people together for what I think is a pretty outstanding celebration for a small town,” he said.

Background As Peace Promoter in Northern Ireland

Coyne, age 62, got experience bringing people together when in the mid-1970s he worked in Northern Ireland with church groups that were trying to bridge the gap between the Catholics and the Protestants who mired in a decades-long conflict. He also worked as a Vista volunteer in Alabama, when racial issues riveted the southern United States.

A former reporter, Coyne has 26 years of experience in public relations work at Mount Saint Mary College and he intends to apply some of these principles locally through the Lions Club.

He Has Plans for the Lions Club

He says he would like to see local children involved in an international competition to design a peace poster through the Lions and he’d like to see the club work with officials to put up signs on Route 9W to let travelers know there is a whole range of services and businesses right down the road in Cornwall.

“We have a very strong club in Cornwall, more than 75 members, and it continues to grow steadily,” Coyne said. “I am very proud to be a Lion.”
