General News: Electrical Fire Shuts Angola Road

The fire's proximity to the roadway meant the road had to be closed to traffic.

June 07, 2010

When a fast-moving storm swept through parts of Cornwall on Sunday afternoon, it blew down a tree branch that hit two power lines, knocking one down that sent a bright yellow arc into the roadway and a spiral of thick grey smoke into the air.  The incident alsotook out the power to Central Hudson power customers in the Angola Road area, some for as long as three hours.

Cornwall police shut down Angola Road near the scene of the arcing wires and drivers had to make a u-turn either back to Route 9W or to Route 32.  Cornwall Fire Department chief Patrick Hines was on the scene along with a truck from Highland Engine when approached by News from Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson.  Hines said that he was waiting for a crew from Central Hudson to arrive and turn off the power before the fire department could extinguish the electrical fire.
