With the clock ticking on a decision whether the New York Military Academy will close its doors at the end of June, fundraisers for the school are holding on to optimism that their efforts will pay off just in time.

Tony Jarrett, a NYMA graduate who is acting as the spokesperson for the NYMA 2.0 Foundation, said that alumni, parents and staff are working closely with the board of trustees and hope to have a solution before graduation this Saturday. “There are a couple of promising leads, people with deep pockets and big hearts whom we are hoping will step up,” Jarrett said on Tuesday.

Elected Representatives Met with NYMA Officials

Jarrett credits the positive response from potential donors to the NYMA 2.0 proposal the foundation created that calls for a revamping of the curriculum and a renovation of the facilities at the 121-year-old military academy in Cornwall. In April, the board of trustees announced that it was suspending operations at the school after graduation in June, sparking a widespread effort to save the institution.

Last weekend, Cornwall town supervisor Kevin Quigley, state senator Bill Larkin and state assemblywoman Nancy Calhoun met with NYMA superintendent Capt. Robert Watts and a trustee to see how they could help support the continued operation of the school. They also gave Watts copies of the petitions signed by more than 2,000 local residents who support the school.

Town Council to Meet on Thursday

After the meeting, supervisor Quigley said that he is optimistic that something could work out to save NYMA and on Tuesday morning he and other town council members met in a closed-door executive session with the town attorney to discuss their options. A public town council meeting on the subject has been set for Thursday, June 3, at 4 pm at Cornwall Town Hall.

Jarrett said that members of the NYMA 2.0 Foundation would like to make an announcement before the students leave the campus after graduation. If the school stays open next year, some of those students are expected to return, he said. “Everyone is being very cautious, they don’t want to be too optimistic or too negative. We’re tap dancing a fine line,” Jarrett said.
