The Newburgh Free Academy Solar Racing Team was full throttle during the month of May. On May 7, the team raced in the CT Electrathon at Limerock Race Track in Lakeville, Connecticut, where NFA entered two vehicles into the event.

J-Bird, a fully electric vehicle, with drivers Mike Cinnante and Mikey Feigel, completed 16 laps on the half mile track. Unfortunately, J-Bird suffered a rear wheel failure midway through the race and had to be withdrawn.

Attila the Sun, a solar-electric vehicle, with drivers Matt Lustbader and Brian Wersbe, completed 28 laps in the 60-minute race. Attila won 1st Place in the Solar Division. All the students who participated felt like winners and had a great time!

The very next day, May 8, the Solar Racing Team participated in the Green Grand Prix in Watkins Glen, NY. The event took place on the roads around Seneca Lake. Sol Machine VII stole the eyes of all the people in the town as Mikey Feigel drove her through Watkins Glen. At the display, Sol Machine VII won the coveted People's Choice Award. Other types of vehicles at the event included hydrogen, fuel cell, hybrid, eletrathon, and even a truck that ran on wood pellets.

On May 22, some members of the NFA Solar Racing Team participated in the KidWind Challenge at Somers Middle School in Somers, NY. With alternative energy forms as their motivation, NFA entered three wind turbines in the competition. The goal was to produce the best average power (watts) in 60 seconds.

Team 1, with Brian Wersbe, Arianna Guttierez, and Nicole Anastasio, took 2nd Place with an average power of about 6.20mW (milliwatts). Team 3, with Matt Lusbader, Mike Cinnante, Eric Meah, and Garrett, Sutcliff took a 3rd Place with an average power of about 4.50mW. Team 2, with Andrew Goldin, Eddie Hopper, and Mikey Feigel also received recognition for their wind turbine. In the two weeks available to design and build the wind turbines, all three teams did a magnificent job and preformed well!

Continuing the busy month, on May 23, Sol Machine VII, and the team's full-size, road-registered electric car (a 1929 Mercedes Benz Super Sportster kit car) drove in the New Windsor Memorial Day Parade. Both cars received many cheers from the crowds.  The cars paraded again in the Town of Newburgh Memorial Day Parade on May 30.

Congradulations to all the members of the NFA Solar Racing Team for an exciting, fun, and successful month! And special thanks to Mr. Chris Eachus (Team Advisor) for all the work he's put into these events!
