More than 700 people turned out last Saturday at the Black Rock Fish and Game Club to celebrate and salute the life of Sgt. Eddie Ryan, a Marine who was severely wounded in Iraq.

The day-long celebration for kids and adults alike was designed to raise funds for a personal trainer to work with the wounded vet for at least a year or get him a new wheelchair.

Cornwall’s Renata McGee spearheaded the planning and cooking for the daylong event along with her husband, Jim McGee and other members of the fish and game club. People relaxed and children played under a sparkling blue sky until Sgt. Ryan arrived.
The Marine color guard from Stewart Airport and the bagpipe band from New York’s Unified State Court System heralded his arrival to the fields of the club in Mountainville.

Ryan is paralyzed from the waist down since suffering a brain injury in 2005. He lives with his mother and other family members in Sullivan County.

I think my friend and fellow volunteer, Kathi Ellick may have inadvertently led Nancy Peckenham to believe that I spearheaded this event, but the truth is that I was just a little fish in a big pond. This event truly was a labor of love and took many months of planning. Credit needs to go to all the committee members as follows: Chairman - John Murray, Committee Members - Marty Reilly Sr., Marty Reilly Jr., Colonel John Hussey, Billy LoMeli, Jim McGee, Dan Creagan, Arty Abbott, Carmine Cocchia, Ted Sikora, Dean G., Rob Fitgerald, all of our spouses and children, and so many members from Black Rock Fish & Game Club. I know that John Murray will be sending out a thank you letter to the editor, but I also would like to take a moment to say thank you to everyone who attended this event and all the local vendors who supported it through their generous donations.

Renata was the Queen of the Kitchen and she is correct to say that the labor of love was truly a community event. The organizers many hours of planning showed with the success of the event.

Great event. (And great reporting!) Sorry we couldn't make it but congratulations and thanks to all who planned and produced such a worthwhile event. Well done!
