If music just makes you gleeful then a new program for teenage girls is ready for you to take its stage by storm. Riverside Theatre Arts has developed a creative week for young women ages 11-16 to explore the arts through movement and music. Working with talent from New York City, these tweens and teens will have the opportunity to learn about music, theater, dance and themselves during a week that works with each individual’s talent and culminates in a showcase for family.

Laurie Perrone, a resident of Cornwall who founded the group, explains. “Young ladies today are constantly dealing with challenges of their self-image. We want this week to give them confidence and an experience in a non-competitive setting,” she said.

Riverside Theatre Arts is premiering its new model this summer with a weeklong workshop from June 28-July 2 at the Dance Design studio in Cornwall. The campers never have to leave Orange County and they can experience a taste of New York theater with Broadway professionals.

The story behind the songs

Ilene Reid, a Cornwall resident who has experience in jazz, musical theater, and glee club choirs (called swing choirs in the Midwest), will bring her talent to the voices of the students in the camp. With writing credits that span the country as well as a variety of venues, Reid brings much more to her classes than her knowledge of voice. This combination of singing and writing provides Reid with a unique way to teach her students how to interpret a piece of music. Reid’s professional writing credits include a song in the recent Broadway smash, Swing. She and her partner also wrote the Off-Broadway hit, Bingo, The Musical. They are currently collaborating on a new Broadway musical, Genius, based on Patrick Dennis’ book.

Choreography takes the music to the next level

Andrew Palermo, who will work with the girls on choreography for this project, is the artistic director and co-founder of dre.dance, a NYC based contemporary dance company. He has nearly two decades of professional performing experience including the original Broadway companies of Wicked and Annie Get Your Gun (revival), and the closing Broadway company of How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying. Palermo is also in in-demand instructor at all levels of the teaching spectrum.

Tuition for the 9 am to 4 pm program is $250. Further information may be obtained by calling Laurie Perrone at 534-4314 or email [email protected]. Watch for more opportunities with this new group in the fall.
