General News: This Week in Lacrosse

May 25, 2010

From Dina Clohessy

7/8 Grade Boys Green Squad

The 7/8 grade boys lacrosse Green Squad defeated Kingston 6-1 this past Saturday May 22, at home.

Netting goals for the Green team were Eric Growney, Pat Havey, Matt Wheeler, Ty Molloy, Stephen DeRosa, and Travis Murtagh. The defense was led by goalie Victor Ramos supported by solid play from defensemen Ben Friedlander, Jimmy DeStaso and Jesse Woinicki who kept the Kingston offense outside.

Outstanding midfield effort and ball control by Mike Vecchio, PJ Ryan, and Kyle Eng kept the ball in Cornwall's offensive end of the field, leading to scoring by six different Cornwall players. The Green Squad record stands at 3 wins, 2 losses, and 3 ties this season.

7/8 Grade Boys White Squad

On Sunday, the 7/8 grade boys White Squad improved their record to 4-1 with a 10-0 win against an undermanned team from Goshen.

The boys exhibited excellent team work throughout the game and continued their aggressive ways on defense. Ryan Hazard, Kraig Sheets and Michael White had impressive games, while Zack Penaluna recorded his first shutout of the season in goal. Zach had Matthew Suckling, Christopher Lau and Steven Fox protecting him on the defensive end of the field.

The team takes a break during the Memorial Day weekend and then faces its toughest weekend of lacrosse with an away game on June 5 against Minisink and a home game on June 6 against the Raptors from Valley Central.

3/4 Grade Girls

The 3/4 grade girls team played Minisink and it was a really good game. All of the girls played well and showed great improvement in many areas of the game. The Cornwall team lost 4 to 3 but had many shots on goal that bounced out.

5/6 Grade Boys

The 5/6 grade boys beat Goshen 7-0. The team kept up its momentum from the first face off until the end of the game.

Alexander Velez & Tristan Norton kept Goshen scoreless assisted by the strong defense of Dominick Fayo, Matthew Carpender and Anthony DeStasso. Gabe Flaten won key faceoffs and Conor Havey had his first goal on a fast break. Midfielder Devin Corey had an assist, played hard defensively by getting ground balls to feed the attack. Attack Richard Thorpe and Jose Ramos moved the ball well throughout the game. Michael Turner and Christian Scileppi played well at attack. Their next game is June 5 against Minisink.

High School Boys

The high school boys participated in an eight team tournament at Rondout HS.

Cornwall won its first game, against Walkill, then played the Newburgh varsity team and lost in a close defensive struggle.

The team played the Kingston varsity for 3rd place and lost in another defensive game. The entire team of three attack units, five midfield units, two defense units and two goalies played in each games.

All the boys have worked hard and earned the right to play in this tournament and had a very good showing against some good and very experienced teams.

Cornwall can be proud of the boys as they finished their first season with four losses. two wins and a tie. The improvement was remarkable especially when you consider that they came up against teams that have had lacrosse programs for years.
