General News: St. Thomas School Must Boost Enrollment

The future of St. Thomas of Canterbury Parish School in Cornwall-on-Hudson is on the line, and parents and administrators have until the end of May to boost enrollment if they want to ensure the school’s continued operation.
St. Thomas’s principal, Dennis Costello, said that Timothy McNiff, the superintendent of schools for the New York Catholic archdiocese spoke to parents at a meeting on Tuesday night when he delivered the message that if next fall’s student population doesn’t increase, the school will close.
Costello said that 100 students are enrolled in grades K-8 and he hopes that current students will re-enroll and that through the efforts of parents and staff the school can attract some new students and raise enough funds to get a reprieve from the archdiocese.
Costello noted that the archdiocese is committed to keeping Catholic education alive in the area and that McNiff was supportive of efforts to keep St. Thomas open. However, he said, if the decision is made to close, students would have the alternative of attending St. Joseph School in New Windsor.
Costello said that enrollment has dropped in recent years, due in part to financial constraints resulting from a bad economy. He remains optimistic and quoted Mark Twain, saying “rumors of our death are greatly exaggerated.”
The St. Thomas parish school first opened in 1917, when students attended class in the former convent. The school expanded into a new building in 1959, where it has operated every since.
