General News: Farmers Market, Food Vendor Possible in Park

May 05, 2010

Food was on the minds of Cornwall town council members Monday evening as they discussed the details of a new farmers’ market on town hall grounds and whether a food vendor should be allowed in the area near the swimming pool.

Farmers Likely to Bring Produce to Town Hall Grounds

The proposal to offer a farmers’ market at town hall was originally introduced by Jim Kent, the head of the town recreation department, who contacted the Cornell Cooperative Extension, which helps organize markets statewide. When leaders of the locally-based Cornwall Food Co-op got wind of his plans, they met with Kent to discuss how the co-op could merge its farm stand on Main Street with a larger market.

On Monday, representatives of the Cornwall Food Co-op proposed that it organize the weekly market for farmers, many of whom already supply fresh produce to the co-op’s Harvest Market. Co-op board president Nancy Proyect suggested either a Sunday or a Tuesday market on town hall grounds.

After a lengthy discussion, the town council agreed to explore how it could work with the co-op to set up the farmers’ market by mid-June.

Food Vendor May Be Allowed Near Town Pool

A proposal to allow a vendor to offer a limited range of prepared foods, like hot dogs, near the playground and pool on town hall grounds received a more lukewarm response from town council members. Town supervisor Kevin Quigley said that the town recreation department had received numerous requests for food services from residents and he had proposals from two vendors who want to sell hot dogs and potato chips in the park.

Council member Randy Clark opposed the idea, saying that it would pull business away from the pizzeria and other shops on Main Street, while creating more problems in the park. “Society is trying to go green and we are bringing in more trash,,” Clark told his fellow council members, “we’re talking about obesity here and we don’t need a hotdog.”

Other council members had reservations about the proposal as well but they agreed to revisit the issue next week at the formal council session.

Comments:

Great news about the collaboration of the CO - OP and the Farmers' Market. How about soy dogs!
