General News: NYMA's Uncertain Future Attracts Interest

May 04, 2010

With the future of the New York Military Academy uncertain, interested groups of potential buyers are lining up to take a look at the 130-acre property in Cornwall, among them a group of Hasidic men who toured the facilities on Monday.

NYMA’s superintendent, Captain Robert Watts, said that the military school has not been listed for sale but that several people looking for a real estate deal contacted him after the board of trustees suspended operations beginning in June. Some of those parties also toured the academy, he said, including the Hasidic group that was observed by students and staff on campus on Monday.

Captain Watts also said that a final decision on whether the school will close will be made in the next 14 to 30 days.

Comments:

Like I said before ... KJ 2.

What gets me upset is that the not 3 years ago a Hasidic group toured the campus in hopes of setting up a summer camp. Rumors swirled that they were looking to buy. NYMA's superintendent insisted the school had rubust funding and had no chance of closing. I guess the truth eventually comes out. What are the chances NYMA does the right thing for C-O-H?

For those who cannot grasp the obvious:
Wake up people! Everyone should be VERY upset about this! With NYMA up for grabs and those surrounding developements on 9W not selling, the climate is perfect for Kiryas Joel Two.

The village trustees and mayor along with the town board and supervisor need to put aside petty differences and concentrate on the future of the property which is now NYMA. There is no more important issue with greater impact on the future value of our homes. To hell with political correctness....for most of us our homes are our single greatest investment and we can't allow the village and the town to become KJ 2 which is exactly what will happen unless we collectively take a stand and fight this. Yes, this is a battle people and until we see it as such we jeopardize the future of our communities!

NYMA Stands with Cornwall. However the current administrations has done nothing but throw up roadblock after roadblock blocking the Alumni from securing a future for the academy

What about the kids? How do you think they feel when they see the parents fighting like hell to keep the dream of OUR children's school alive and investors wanting to buy the property?! This is insensitive and must stop right away. The school is still our school and we are going to keep it open. Help us win!

The possibility of KJ2 is very real and very close. It is staggaring to think that many in our town have absolutely no idea what this could mean, and what unfamiliar change will come should this happen. Take a moment to check out http://www.preserveramapo.org/ and look at how much of a legal battle these very wealthy towns are having to front over Patrick Farm, the NIKE location and RLUIPA legislaion. Cornwall is a prime target for this type of organizatio to take over, and there is no going back should it happen. Because of religious affiliations, no taxes will be paid. The environmental impacts alone will wreak havoc on an already stressed system. And surrounding homes and businesses will be bought out, methodically, one by one to accomodate a completely different culture. Our school district will no longer sing its praises, and our house values will plummet. Imagine a slaughterhouse less than a mile from the schools. Imagine a huge chain link fence with hundreds of families occupying NYMA, some 10 or more to a house. There will be no assimilation into the community in a harmonious sense. Their children wont play with ours, and for those of us who are Jewish, we are not accepted as worthy either. This is an elitest group that lives in squalor, who will close our towns streets to traffic on religious days and who will not be here for any other reason than to take advantage of and take over what we know today. Please, check out the website...see what we will be in for.

Yes, please use you name to comment. It adds credibility.
That being said I have to whole-heartily agree with on's points. KJ is busting at the seams and a location 20+ minutes away is super attractive. The rival Hasidic faction in KJ will make every effort to obtain a foothold in our town. We offer everything in the way of utilities, available land, access to the river for Sabbath observance, the list is lengthy. It would be a matter of a few short years before the village board was dominated by their chosen representatives. variances and tax base changes would follow and the real changes would unfold overnight.
Don't believe me? Just do nothing, and you will see. I love Cornwall and I think you folks do too. I will make every effort I can to stop this invasion and welcome patriots to the cause. If we can save NYMA and keep it running, fine. That would be ideal. But if it comes to selling, we are in for a fight. Talk with your friends and neighbors about this issue. We must all be aware of OUR situation.

OMG seriously?? Am I the only person who can see the name "Rachael Skigen" directly below her comment? Did anyone read it to the end?!
I work in Monroe and drive through the "squalor" every day. Suffice it to say it would be absolutely devastating on many levels if the Hasids purchased that property. Rachael is correct.

New to comments, as it was my first one. I had signed up more than a year ago and never posted before, so I had no idea how it works with a signature. I truly stand by my convictions as well as having had first hand experience when any type of community is threatened to be overrun regardless of race, creed or religion. Awareness and community unity is the only way to hopefully have a say in what happens here, and yes, it will be a fight. Rachael Skigen
