General News: Train-Hopping Pair Jump Off at Landing

April 29, 2010

A middle-age man and his son had an adventure last Saturday when they hopped a freight train in Kingston and headed south, finally jumping off into the hard gravel along the tracks at Cornwall Landing.

Cornwall-on-Hudson police report that they were alerted by a member of the Cornwall yacht club who encountered the bloodied pair as the approached the club, where they asked to use the bathroom. One of the witnesses, who asked not to be identified, said the man was visibly shaking and the boy had cuts on his arms, shoulder, head and knee. They did not want to notify the police or emergency services and one of the yacht club members took them to Cornwall hospital, where they were later interviewed by the village police.

The unidentified 43-year-old man told police that he was from Rhinebeck and that he and his 13-year-old son had gone to Barnes & Noble’s bookstore in Kingston to purchase books and magazines. After they left, he said, his son went to look at a passing freight train, then hopped aboard. The father said he yelled for his son to get off, and when he didn’t, he jumped on as well. He said they waited until the train slowed down at Cornwall Landing to make their leap to safety.

The witness said that she thought their story was suspicious, noting that the man was wearing a backpack strapped to his waist, not what you’d typically wear to go to the bookstore. “I think they were having an adventure,” she said, “it was all very strange.”
