It’s high drama and great musical heights at Cornwall high school starting Thursday as talented student performers tackle the sensational operetta Les Miserables.

Show director Rich Aufiero acknowledges that the production is a “vast departure from the typical fare for the Cornwall community” but says that he could not ignore an opportunity to offer amazing orchestration and compelling drama,

A Tale of Redemption and Revolution

The lead performers deliver amazing performances, their songs telling a classic story of redemption and revolution in 19th-century France.

Les Miserables
follows the odyssey of Jean Valjean (played by Patrick Hoagland), the hero of the 19th-century novel by Victor Hugo, who flees prison after serving time for stealing a loaf of bread. An act of forgiveness gives the former inmate a chance to start anew and he rises to prominence under a false name only to run afoul his former prison guard, Javert (played by Brien Schweizer).

As Valjean strives to be a force for good in the world, he befriends a dying prostitute and pledges to protect her daughter who has been boarded out with an abusive couple, the Thenardiers. As he tries to make good on his promise, Valjean is pursued by his former jailer. He tries to start anew with the young daughter amid wild scenes featuring gangs of thugs who create havoc and crowds of student rebels who plot the overthrow of the government. Cosette, the daughter, finds love with the student, Marius, and the social forces of the 19th-century conspire with great pageantry to fulfill their destinies.

Talented SIngers and Actors Give Passionate Performances

This production of Les Miserables will inspire the audience with its story and with the intensity of the performances by the hugely talented actors and singers in the drama club. Surely director Rich Aufiero would not have attempted such a serious operetta if he had not be able to count on the rich vocals and passionate performances that the students deliver on stage.

A dynamic 22–member pit orchestra led by musical director Tony Ravinsky delivers an electric performance of the score, which was written by the French composer Claude-Michel Schönberg. Ravinsky also serves as technical director for the show and oversaw the construction of the set by a crew of student set builders. Dozens of parents and teachers pitched in to make this show a raging success, including Beth Whalen as choreographer and Pam Huestis as head costumer.

Comments:

This was one of the best productions Cornwall has ever produced. The combination of student talent, adult talent and the "magic" that only happens once in a rare while is evident here. As a Dramamama, I am a biased fan of CCHS Productions, but this one is above and beyond, and should not be missed.
