Surveillance cameras in Cornwall town park were key to the arrest of two juveniles this week. Cornwall police chief Todd Hazard says that police discovered on Saturday that the park restrooms had been vandalized with paintballs and a review of recent video footage led them to 11-year-old and a 12-year-old boys who were seen on the video with paintball guns.

Hazard says that the pair was referred to the Orange County Probation Department for the charge of criminal tampering in the third degree. He also reports that the restrooms were closed until Monday, when the town’s buildings and grounds department was able to clean up the paint.

“It is unfortunate that these events occur, especially when it leads to the closure of services provided in the town park which is used by many of our residents,” Hazard said in a release. “We are pleased that the video cameras were instrumental and hope that they will prevent future incidents

Those of you that opposed "big brother" cameras can now see the value.

Ummmm... why aren't the stupid kids who did this cleaning it up??

yes, that mess and then they should pick up garbage from all over town for the rest of the year. good old fashioned consequences.

Why are these kids so destructive? I'm interested in what time of day this destructive behavior happened.

The cameras just paid off- but I have to agree with Sandi- why the kids did not do the clean up? Did the parks employees incur overtime on the weekend to do it? The big question for me is why the parents of these boys didn't suggest they do the clean up? Maybe that is why they did such a criminal thing to begin with- no respect for public and private property of others. Maybe the judge will come up with an appropriate punishment.

Perhaps the Town saw fit to have the restrooms cleaned up and re opened before the two kids were actually convicted and sentenced. In a perfect world the kids would clean up the restrooms but should we have to wait six weeks for that to happen. I don't think you can convict them without due process and I am certain you can't sentence them without it.

They're obviously too young to be the ones who've pepper all the road signs with paint balls

Yes, agree that everyone (including juveniles) should be afforded their legal rights and the legal process followed, but assuming that results in a conviction (or more likely an admission of guilt), does anyone actually feel that these kids should not be compelled to clean up that damage they caused??? Or since it has already been corrected at taxpayer expense, perform other community service - like actually pick up garbage around town for a period of time? Does that punishment not fit the crime? Shouldn't we teach these kids that there are old fashioned consequences to their actions? And what are we teaching our kids if we let them off with just a stern warning?

These kids won't be cleaning up a thing unless their parents make them. The last bunch of kids that got caught spray painting, what happened to them? I did see one boy cleaning a handful of signs around town under his father's supervision. But there are at least two dozen more graffitied signs and property with his "tag" still on them around town. He should keep scrubbing.
Trouble these days is that parents don't know what their kids are up to and just assume the best. Blissfully unaware.
