The folks at the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum are counting down for their annual Earth Day celebrations. If you’re a hiker or outdoor enthusiast be sure to circle Saturday,April 24 on your calendar and make plans to attend the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum’s Fourth Annual Hike-A-Thon. The hike is one of the Museum’s major fundraisers for the year.

An event for the whole family, the 2010 Hike-A-Thon will once again kick-off the Museum’s Earth Day celebration and the season opening of the Discovery Quest trails at the Outdoor Discovery Center on Angola Road in Cornwall.

Earth Day activities will include an Earth Day Family Fun Fair, featuring a performance by the Museum’s Young Naturalists, and a Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Community Yard Sale, where you can browse for treasures or, for $25, you can still purchase a 10 x 12 spot to offer your own items for sale.

Museum staff will lead family activities in the Green Zone at "Energy Island", "Turtle Town", "Compost Country", "Tree Territory", "Endangered Avenue" and "Water Way." Children who get their free Planet Protector Passport stamped at each booth will win a prize. Children will also enjoy pony rides, a petting zoo, nature play, games, story telling and music by Lydia Adams Davis.

“Combining the Hike-A-Thon with the Museum’s Earth Day celebration was a great success last year,” said Jackie Grant, Executive Director of the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum. “There was something for everyone – and this year promises to be filled with even more fun-filled activities,” Grant continued.

Now in its fourth year, the Hike-A-Thon has proven to be a very successful fundraiser for the Nature Museum. “For those interested in supporting the Museum, it’s easy to get involved with the Hike-A-Thon,” said Hike committee co-chair and Museum trustee Susan Christensen. “Hikers are asked to form teams and collect small sponsorships from others to support their participation in the Hike. There’s no registration fee, we simply ask hikers to try for a goal of raising $100 per hiker. The simplicity and uniqueness of this event has made it a successful fundraiser,” Christensen continued.

Hikers will be able to choose from a variety of trails, as well as guided and independent hikes. Hikes range in difficulty from a very easy, stroller-friendly trail for families with young children or adults with “bum knees” to the Highlands Challenge for hikers looking for a more vigorous hike, as well as the Museum’s moderate to slightly challenging trails for those hikers in between. The event will start at 9:00 a.m. with group warm-up exercises and hikers will set off soon after. The trails will be supervised until noon, giving everyone a chance to enjoy a beautiful day outdoors. Earth Day activities and the Community Yard Sale will begin at 10:00 a.m.
